What after INTERMEDIATE? Why
Intermediate study is becoming so crucial for today’s youngsters? In a life
journey, there are many milestones, many steps leading to the growth spiral.
But one should not forget that, at some point of the journey (call it a
junction?) one has to think a while, and decide: Which is the right way to go?
After all, it’s a make or break situation. Is anything else that is more
important than deciding on career option for your life?
And, precisely for this reason,
Intermediate has become so important for the students in the country.
Intermediate is the starting phase for a student to make his professional
choices clear. One has to decide which career to pursue. Which is the best
choice suited for him/her.
Career planning is one of the
most crucial factors in your life, this needs no emphasis. And, planning of a
career is so important at least for two reasons. First, whether you opt for a
job or prefer to be on your own, one should understand that there is a fierce
competition in every walk of life.
In view of the emerging new
technologies, and the advent of World Wide Web,
world is at your doorstep. And, the Information technology (IT)
revolution and globalization of the economy, there are now more and more
options for the students to choose from. You will have to look for these
options. Remember also that these are days of specialization.
Intermediate or 10+2 is the
formative age to shape your career. There is variety of choices or course
options available for the youngsters now. For any student in our country,
Intermediate is the first step to decide about the career option. In
Intermediate, you will have to choose from three streams viz., science,
arts/humanities and commerce with appropriate combination of subjects.
To a great extent, this choice
would determine the course options available for you after the 10 + 2 level.
For example, if you want to take up engineering degree course, you should not
only join the science stream but should also opt for the combination comprising
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Before you embark upon a career
planning you have to consider two issues:
1. How you are looking to build
your career? Do you need an immediate job because of some family circumstances?
2. Is your family financially sounds enough to
pay for your professional education?
If you need a job, but still want
to pursue higher education, you may like to take up a suitable course through
distance learning mode. There are more options available now. You can study
according to your own pace and convenience. You can even study both the
secondary (Class 10) and higher secondary (10 + 2) courses through the
distance-learning mode.
As regards the second issue, the
stark reality is that it is becoming increasingly difficult for many middle
class families to meet the spiraling cost of professional education. Scholarships
and other financial supports are scarce. You may be aware that in professional
colleges there are two categories of seats available for students -“free seats”
and “payment seats”.
Since the tuition fees for “free
seats” are highly subsidized, you pay much less compared to those for “payment
seats”. Generally, “free seats” are allotted to students on the basis of their
performance at the entrance tests. You will, therefore, have to strive very
hard if you want to get a “free seat” in professional colleges.
If your family is unable to bear
the cost of “elite” professional courses, you may choose a professional course,
which also promises a reasonably good career at an affordable cost. It is
prudent to cut your coat according to the available cloth. However, the
financial consideration alone need not determine this option. There are other
good reasons too for seeking a career in these professions. This option should
also be considered if you cannot get through entrance tests for professional
courses. Career planning should be preceded by two steps:
1. Assess your strengths and weaknesses,
likings, aptitudes and interests.
2. Gather as much information as possible about
the various educational opportunities and choose one that suits your
requirements.
If you do not intend to pursue
university education, you may opt for various Vocational Courses available in
different areas. The most-sought after course is the polytechnic courses of
three-year duration leading to diplomas in different branches of engineering
and technology. The advantage of polytechnic courses is that in some branches a
diploma holder can make a lateral entry into degree-level engineering courses.
A clear idea about the vocational courses, therefore, would be helpful in
taking an appropriate decision.
Options after Intermediate:
1. Engineering
2. Medicine
3. BSc/BCA (For Science subject
students).
4. B Com (For Commerce subject
students)
5. BA (For Arts/Humanities
students)
In Addition, there are a number
of Vocational courses, leading to employment in various sectors. The options
available are discussed in detail in the list given below.
Engineering Stream:
There is a common belief among the people that
science is the most important subject, compared to humanities or even commerce.
There is also a general feeling in our society that the best students opt for
science. This is an assumption of most parents, students and teachers. In fact,
brilliance and intelligence is not the exclusive preserve of science. If a
student is interested in doing engineering courses, such as BE /B Tech in
subjects like Computer Science (CS), Electronics and Communications (EC), Civil,
Mechanical, Metallurgy, Electrical etc the option should be to appear for a
common entrance test EAMCET, which enables a student to get a seat in any
of the engineering colleges in the state, depending upon the performance in the
test. Since, there are a good number of colleges, and quality education is
being provided there, Engineering should be an obvious choice for any
Intermediate students with MPC option.
There are many other national-level admission tests for the meritorious
students like IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), AIEEE, VIT (Vellore
Institute of Technology) etc.
Medicine:
The situation is not the same
with the BiPC students as there are less number of medical colleges in the
state. So, the competition is intense, particularly for the Medicine students.
But, one fails to get seat in the Medicine, not everything is lost. There are
many other avenues for the BiPC students as well like BSc,
Bio-technology, B Pharmacy, BSc Agriculture
Science, dairy science, Food and Nutrition etc.
Commerce:
The world thrives on business. The more the
economy grows more the options will be for the Commerce students. Apart from doing the degree level courses like
B Com, leading to Master of Business Administration (MBA) or M Com,
there are many other professional courses available for the Commerce students like
CA, ICWA etc. This helps them establish themselves in a
short span of time. It may, therefore, be wise for the students to opt for a
basic B.Com degree with Computer as one of the combinations, as it is now a
much-sought after course.
Arts/Humanities:
Though not so popular among the students,
humanities also offer many options after 10 + 2 other than the usual BA degree
course. Except for courses in science and technology areas, they can take up
many other courses such as travel & tourism, English literature,
teaching, advertising, journalism, performing arts, business management, etc.
Humanities is also the favorite choice of many students who sit for the
civil service examinations.
In all the three streams,
students can now opt for job-oriented vocational subjects at the first degree
level available in selected colleges affiliated to many universities. Another
recent development has been the diversification of courses, professional in
nature, at the first-degree level itself, although the number of institutions
offering such course is still small. International post graduate programmers of
five-year duration after 10 + 2 in several subjects are being introduced by
some universities
Whatever stream you may select,
you should put in your best efforts, which would surely lead to you to a path
of success. Obtaining high marks in the qualifying examinations will put you in
a comparatively better position to get into a course of your choice after the
10 + 2 level.

Career Planning is one of the most difficult part
in the life of Student because a student has to keep in mind his aptitude,
financial background and future prospects. A person can be successful if he do
thing in which he has lot of interest. It might not be high salary oriented but
he would get job satisfaction. He will do his work with full interest and rise
in chosen career.
Student should begin the career planning when
they are in Ninth Standard. Student has to choose his subjects when he enters
10 +2 / Intermediate. It can be science or commerce stream. In Science stream
there are two combinations one is for engineering (PCM) and other is for
medical stream (PCB). Now selection of Boards is also important because in new
entrance examinations the marks of Intermediate would also be taken in account
for selection in a professional course. So a student has to score good marks in
his 10 + 2 examination.
A student of 10th might not have full
knowledge about different career options before him. This is the main drawback
for students, that they don't have persons who can guide them through correct
career path. Parents can only provide information about their careers in which
they are working. Internet searches can provide information about colleges and
courses. No one can access your interest, whether you want to become doctor,
engineer, CA, teacher, scientist, artist, journalist or an entrepreneur. In
this page we have listed all possible career groups from which you can choose
the best suitable for yourself.
Financial condition is a big limiting factor
because all the professional colleges have high academic fees. Competition for
entrance exam is also a limitation factor as lot of coaching institutes have
sprung up which train student according to the exact exam format, for that they
charge high fees which everyone cannot afford. So the correct way is judge your
capabilities and keep each career path listed below in front of you and ask
yourself following questions -
- How many marks should you get in your 10 + 2 exam?
- Do you have interest in it?
- What is the cost of that course?
- Can your family afford coaching for that entrance
exam or you will do self study
- What are the future prospects of that career?
Top PGDM Colleges in Delhi that set of clothes your necessities and the introduction technique for every one of them. In the event that you knowledge issues choosing a school for yourself, you can visit the grounds and converse the understudies and the graduated class if conceivable.
